A group of journalists accused police Monday of beating at least 100 students in the past three months just because they had taken part in public demonstrations.

The journalists said they have lodged a formal protest with Prime Minister Mieczyslaw Rakowski and urged that he take steps to stop the police brutality.The 248 independent Polish journalists met Saturday and Sunday in Warsaw and drafted the statement.

They also sent a letter to authorities demanding the lifting of censorship and the relegalization of their independent association.
