Police believe they have one of the U.S.-Mexico border's most notorious drug traffickers behind bars, and they want to keep him there this time.
Gilberto Ontiveros Lucero was arrested Monday at a house in Juarez, said Esteban Garcia Villalon, coordinator of the Mexican federal judicial police's anti-drug campaign in Chihuahua state. It marked Ontiveros' second arrest on drug-trafficking charges in less than three years. He was jailed in April 1986, but a Juarez federal judge dropped the charges last May and set Ontiveros free.
About 45 to 50 federal police officers began searching for Ontiveros on Dec. 29 after police found nearly eight tons of marijuana in warehouses in south Juarez. Officials believe Ontiveros was planning to smuggle the Mexican marijuana into the United States.
