A couple of poetry competitions are waiting to be won.

The Sparrowgrass Poetry Forum is offering a $500 grand prize in its "Awards for Poetic Excellence" competition.Poets may enter one poem only, 20 lines or less, on any subject, in any style. Deadline is March 31. There is no fee. Send your poem and a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Sparrowgrass Poetry Forum Inc., Dept. C, 203 Diamond St., Box 193, Sisterville, W.Va. 26175.

The Coastal Classic Poetry Contest has a $1,000 purse. Along with a $500 grand prize, there are five other prizes totaling $500.

Those who enter receive a free subscription to Poetics, a poetry newsletter.

Each poet may enter one poem only, 20 lines or less, on any subject. Poems cannot be returned. Deadline is Feb. 15. No entry fee.

(BU) The Salt Lake Chapter of the League of Utah Writers has slated the first session of a free writing course at 6:45 p.m. Jan. 10 in the Salt Lake City Main Library, 245 E. Fifth South.

Topics to be discussed include generating ideas, audience and purpose.

(BU) The Canyon's Edge, a production about the Colorado Plateau that incorporates photography, folklore, music and good storytelling, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12 in the East High School auditorium, 840 S. 13th East.
