R. Dean Plowman, head of the Utah State University department of animal, dairy and veterinary science, has been appointed administrator of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Research Service.

A native of Smith-field who worked 25 years for the agency, Plowman will direct activities of the largest agricultural research service in the world.The agency employs 8,500 people in 140 locations throughout the United States and foreign countries.

His appointment was announced by U.S. Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Orville G. Bentley. Plowman succeeds Terry B. Kinney, who is retiring.
