A Kalkaska County man literally pulled a 36-pound, four-ounce muskellunge out of Clam Lake after snaring the fish on a worm-baited hook attached to 6-pound-test line.

Marty Huotari, 28, of Rapid City said he had caught 13 perch Wednesday before the next strike nearly bent his ice-fishing rod double. The 50-inch muskie had become hooked in its jaw cartilage rather than inside its mouth, where its sharp teeth probably would have cut the light line, he said.

Huotari tugged at the muskie for about 90 minutes before he was able to pull its head partly through the hole in the ice. He said he reached down, wrapped his arms around the muskie and pulled his exhausted quarry through while rolling out the shanty door onto the ice.
