Palestinians of the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip staged a general strike for a second day in a row on Monday to mark the start of the 14th month of their uprising against Israeli military rule.

The stoppage by workers among the 1.7 million Palestinian residents halted transport and closed shops. Both the unified command of the uprising and its rival Islamic resistance movement, Hamas, called the new strike a day after Palestinians stayed away from work to commemorate those killed in the violence.

At least 357 Palestinians and 14 Israelis have died in the revolt that erupted in the Gaza Strip on Dec. 9, 1987, and quickly spread to the West Bank.
