A Provo woman charged with stabbing her 2-year-old son last April has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.

Dixie A. Madsen made the plea Friday before 4th District Judge Boyd L. Park, who ordered the defendant to return to court Feb. 3 for a hearing to review her mental competency. After undergoing treatment at the Utah State Hospital, Madsen was found mentally competent last November to stand trial.The defendant originally faced charges of attempted second-degree murder, a second-degree felony, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge as part of a plea agreement.

Police reported they found Madsen's son, Brandon Madsen, with a knife wound to his chest after a neighbor reported a stabbing. The boy recovered fully.
