An investigation was under way Friday into the death of a young Indiana skier who smashed out-of-control into a ski lift tower, the Pitkin County sheriff's office said.
John Heit III, 23, of Indianapolis died at Aspen Valley View Hospital late Thursday about three hours after hitting the tower on the Elk Camp run at a ski resort in Snowmass.Resort officials said Heit apparently was skiing fast and out-of-control when he hit the tower. He was taken to the Snowmass ski clinic and then to the Aspen Valley View Hospital.
County Coroner Gary White said Heit died of traumatic cardiac arrest resulting from massive internal injuries. An investigation was under way to determine the exact cause of the accident.
