President Reagan extended his condolences to the Japanese people on the death of their emperor Friday, saying Hirohito had helped forge close ties between Japan and the United States after World War II.

Sources in the transition team of President-elect Bush said his attendance at the funeral was under "active consideration." Asked who would lead the U.S. delegation to Hirohito's funeral, White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said: "This is a matter for the Bush administration."
