Bryan Patterson, 84, director of athletics and football at Salt Lake's Westminister College from 1927 to 1938, died Dec. 27, 1988, in Napa after a long illness.

Known to acquaintances as "Pat," he was presented the Manford A. Shaw outstanding alumnus award in 1977 by Westminster, which also established an annual football scholarship in his name.Mr. Patterson spent more than 15 years as a student and coach at the college, where he was a one-person athletic department, coaching track, basketball, boxing and other sports. Under his leadership, Westminster won its first intermountain junior college football championship and three state junior college titles.

A native of Chicago and the son of a Presbyterian minister, Mr. Patterson was reared in Utah, Nevada and California. He attended and was active in athletics at Springville High School and Wasatch Academy and obtained his associate of arts degree from Westminster in 1924.
