A former junior high school teacher and coach was ordered to serve half of a 180-day jail term after pleading no contest Wednesday to lewdness charges.
Dale B. Asay, 31, 5631 S. Lolene Way, Kearns, entered the plea after being accused of fondling a 14-year-old female student.Witnesses told police Asay met alone with the girl on several occasions in March and April, according to a police report. Police had ordered Asay to stay away from the girl, but there were subsequent meetings and phone calls to the girl's house before the misdemeanor charges were filed in 3rd Circuit Court.
The girl also gave officers five $20 bills and a number of other gifts she said Asay had given her, the report said.
The man's wife and two children were also questioned by police about his contacts with the student.
As part of Asay's sentence, Judge Tyrone E. Medley included six months of probation after the jail time, ordered the man to have no contact with the girl - either directly or through a third party, ordered him to have no meetings alone with girls younger than 18, and obligated him to pay the victim's counseling costs.
Asay worked at West Lake Junior High School about 21/2 years before he resigned last year after being placed on probation. He coached boys sports teams and taught physical education and biology.
