A strong earthquake was recorded Tuesday off the southern tip of Japan near the Ryukyu islands of Yaku and Tanega, the Royal Observatory reported.

The quake, which measured an estimated 5.5 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 12:45 p.m. (11:45 p.m. EST Monday) and was centered about 100 miles south-southeast of the Japanese city of Kagoshima, the observatory said in a statement.
