A 25-year-old woman has given birth to Japan's first known sextuplets on southern Kyushu island, but one of the infants died and doctors were fighting to save the rest, the Kyodo News Service reported Tuesday.

The mother, who was not identified, had used an ovulation induction drug before giving birth to the babies, five boys and one girl, at the Kumamoto University Hospital on Kyushu from Saturday through Monday, Kyodo said.The girl died soon after birth and the boys were transferred to a city hospital special care ward where doctors were fighting for the lives of the babies, who weighed from 18 to 24 ounces.
