Gilbert Andrew Benson, 81, a former transportation administrator for the Jordan School District, died June 5, 1993, from complications incident to age.
Mr. Benson was the father of Deseret News sports editor Lee Benson and U.S. District Court Judge Dee Benson.The son of Swedish immigrants, Mr. Benson was a farmer in the Sandy area before joining the school district. As a Jordan District bus driver for more than 50 years, he was never involved in a traffic accident. He graduated from Jordan High School in Sandy and also attended the University of Utah.
Lee Benson joined the Deseret News sports staff in December of 1972 and has been the paper's sports editor and columnist since March of 1979. Dee Benson was formerly U.S. attorney for the state of Utah before becoming a U.S. District Court judge in November 1991. A third son, Gordon Benson, lives in Atlanta, Ga., where he is an account executive with the J.C. Penney Corp., and a daughter, Karen Baker, is a circulation supervisor with the Salt Lake County Library System.
Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, in the Sandy 3rd Ward chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 8825 S. 150 West, Sandy. Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State St., Midvale, and at the church one hour prior to services.
