Ann Edwards Cannon, Utah writer, has been named the winner of the Fifth Annual Delacorte Press Prize for the Outstanding First Young Adult for her book "Cal Cameron by Day, Spider-Man by Night."

The Delacorte Press Prize, which was launched in 1982, is recognition for new writing talent. The award not only carries a $1,000 cash prize but a Delacorte hardcover and a Dell paperback contract."We felt that CAL . . . was a strong effort having an original voice and a new and different slant for a young adult book," said Bebe Willoughby, Editor of Delacorte Press. "I think it is a good story, one that readers will enjoy and relate to."

Willoughby admits new writers have difficulty breaking into the publishing field. "But it is important to open the market to new writers and new voices. By offering this prize we hope to make it possible for unpublished authors to enter into the field. The Press Prize will help to showcase the new talent."
