A Dallas County deputy sheriff was killed at a local jail early Wednesday when a man grabbed her revolver, knocked her to the ground and shot her several times, authorities said.

The suspect was taken to Parkland Hospital and listed in serious condition, nurses said.An apparently distraught man entered the lobby of the Lou Sterrett Criminal Justice Center in the west end of downtown Dallas just after 1 a.m., argued with Dep. Suzanne Kays at the front desk and walked past the desk down a hallway into a restricted area, said Sheriff Jim Bowles.

Kays chased the man, stopped him halfway down the hallway and was escorting him back to the lobby when he suddenly began fighting, took away her gun, struck her in the head and shot her several times as she lay on the ground, Bowles said.
