Marine police in two patrol boats killed one of six heavily armed pirates in a shootout six miles from the Philippine border, authorities said Wednesday.

Marine Police Cmdr. Zainal Abidin told reporters the patrol boats raced to the area Tuesday on receiving information that the pirates were sighted in a boat near Marakin island in the Sulu Sea off Semporna, 1,050 miles east of Kuala Lumpur.On seeing the police, the pirates opened fire. Five of them escaped in the boat, but the body of one pirate, identified only as Bangku, 30, was recovered with two revolvers and ammunition.
