Former oil man George E. Hinckley died Jan. 1, 1989, in Salt Lake City. He was 87.

Mr. Hinckley began working for Utah Oil Refining Co. in 1928. He worked as refinery superintendent and industrial relations manager and editor of the Utoco Torch. He was honored with the Gold Award for outstanding service to the Oil Industry Information Committee for 1955.Mr. Hinckley was born Jan. 30, 1901, in Provo to Martha Ada Robison Hinckley and Lucian Noble Hinckley.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Brigham Young University and a master's degree from the University of Utah.

Mr. Hinckley held several positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers and the Mayflower Society.

Funeral services will be held at noon Jan. 5 in the Edgehill 1st Ward Chapel, 1750 S. 15th East. Friends may call at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 13th South, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday or at the ward from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Thursday. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
