African and other foreign students were beaten with clubs by Chinese police Saturday and forcibly removed from a guest house where they were held during a week of racial unrest in the city, students said.

The incident was reported as police said they had detained a student from Ghana and summoned three others for questioning over a violent Christmas Eve clash between African students and Chinese on a college campus. The Dec. 24 clash set off five days of protests by thousands of angry Chinese students and local residents demanding the black African students be punished for their role in the fight at Hehai University in which 11 Chinese were hurt, one seriously.
