Deseret News officials Monday announced the appointment of Stephen G. Handy, former promotion director for the Standard Examiner in Ogden and a veteran advertising agency executive, as director of marketing for the Deseret News.

Handy, 37, earned a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in business at the University of Utah and spent the past five and a half years at the Ogden newspaper, where he was responsible for various programs that greatly increased the paper's circulation and strengthened its image in the community.According to Deseret News publisher Wm. James Mortimer, "the appointment of Steve Handy as our new marketing director marks a major step forward in the efforts of the Deseret News to expand its market and build its image.

"Newspapers continue to be the most viable source of news and information and our efforts are aimed at strengthening our position in the market and making people more aware of the values of the Deseret News," Mortimer said.

An Ogden native, Handy graduated from Ogden High School in 1969 and served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to northern West Germany from 1970 to 1972. He was an account executive and administrative vice president at Nord Advertising from 1975 to 1978 and an account supervisor and vice president at Pierson Kearney Advertising from 1978 to 1983.

Handy joined the Standard Examiner in 1983 and directed six of the paper's annual Home and Garden Festivals in the Dee Events Center at Weber State College. In 1987, he spearheaded the newspaper's yearlong 100th anniversary celebration and began a two-year chairmanship of Ogden's annual Pioneer Days observance.

He and his wife, Holly, live in Layton with their five children. Mrs. Handy teaches adults English as a second language at Hill Air Force Base.
