City Council members will spend the next two weeks interviewing eight people in hopes of naming a new city manager by Jan. 12, Mayor Clifford Goff said.

Former city manager Cowles Mallory resigned from the post in October by "mutual agreement" with the city council. He has since moved on to become city manager in Davenport, Iowa.A nine-member screening committee recently narrowed the candidates to eight, from more than 100 since the position opened up.

"It's optimistic, but we still hope to be able to announce our choice in the Jan. 12 council meeting," said Goff, who declined to identify the eight finalists.

Under Ogden's city charter, the city manager runs the daily affairs of the city, following policy guidelines set up by the part-time mayor and six council members.
