Glacier National Park will be opening some of its visitor facilities on April 30, at least a month earlier than usual.

Park Superintendent Gil Lusk said the early openings are part of the park's continued efforts to extend the visitor season. The Going-to-the-Sun Road will be open for 22 miles from the west entrance station, as far as The Loop. But foot and vehicle traffic will not be allowed past that point, because of avalanche danger.

The Apgar campground will open for full visitor use, but fees will not be collected until June 1. Picnic areas also will open on April 30, along with the boat ramp and new courtesy dock at Lake McDonald.

The Trail of the Cedars, which is accessible to handicapped people, will be open but will not be maintained until June. However, the condition of the trails will be posted at the Apgar Visitor Center.
