Hearings in 3rd District Court were canceled Friday after a flooded transformer in an adjacent building left the court building without power Thursday afternoon.

A transformer in the basement of the Metropolitan Hall of Justice, 450 S. Third East, was flooded about 2 p.m. when a two-inch water line burst, cutting off power to the 10-story building, the jail, the library, and the district and circuit court buildings. Utah Power and Light crews restored power by 8 p.m.Hearings in the circuit court were being held as scheduled Friday, a court clerk said.

While crews worked on the transformer, emergency power sources were activated for the sheriff's office and 911 dispatch offices and for security lighting in the jail, which was closed to new bookings until the power was restored.
