A 2-year-old Provo boy police say was stabbed by his mother Friday afternoon was in stable condition Saturday following surgery at Primary Children's Medical Center.

The child was found with a stab wound in his chest about 4:30 p.m. Friday at the northwest Provo apartment where he lived with his mother.A Utah County attorney's office report said the mother allegedly phoned a neighbor and said she had stabbed the boy. The neighbor called police and gave the boy first aid until authorities arrived.

The child was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo and later transferred by helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center in critical condition.

The mother was admitted to Timpanogos Community Mental Health Center following her arrest Friday, a Provo Police Department report said.
