A Lebanese magazine reported Friday that Britain and Iran were negotiating secretly for the release of British hostages believed held by pro-Iranian extremists. But a spokesman for the British Foreign Office called the report "absolute nonsense." The weekly Ash-Shiraa magazine, citing "a well-informed source in Moslem west Beirut," said the talks were "expected to result in the release of the British hostages soon." There was no independent confirmation of the report. Britain seeks the release of three of its nationals held in Lebanon - Anglican envoy Terry Waite, journalist John McCarthy and teacher Brian Keenan of Belfast, who holds dual British and Irish nationality.
