Retiring U.S. Sen. William Proxmire began Wednesday a two-day stint as a Milwaukee radio talk show host, mixing anecdotes and interviews in a style that won praise from the station's program director.

"For a non-professional, he came across as bright, articulate and somebody who had really done his homework," WTMJ's Mike Elliott said Wednesday. "He was hard-hitting and an excellent interviewer.

"He had all the qualities you need to have," the station manager added. "I hope all the other talk show hosts who work here listened to the way he did the show."

Proxmire, D-Wis., will not be paid for filling in on the two-hour show Wednesday and Thursday, Elliott said.
