Marty Schottenheimer quit as coach of the Cleveland Browns in a dispute with owner Art Modell that centered on the four-year coach's refusal to relinquish his role as offensive coordinator.

The Browns, who finished second in the AFC Central with a 10-6 record, were eliminated from the playoffs by Houston this weekend. The loss left Schottenheimer with a career mark of 46-31.Schottenheimer joined the Browns as a defensive coordinator in 1980 and assumed the top spot when Sam Rutigliano was fired at the halfway point of the 1984 season.
