A Nevada man trapped for several hours in icy water near the Great Salt Lake was in satisfactory condition Wednesday morning after being rescued by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper and paramedics.
Arthur D. Parshall, 25, Winnemucca, Nev., was driving a small pickup truck west on I-80 about 4 a.m. when the vehicle apparently hit some ice, overturned and slid into three feet of water near the Great Salt Lake Beaches exit, said UHP Sgt. Doug Slagowski.Authorities, notified about 6:30 a.m., arrived 30 minutes later to find Parshall struggling to keep his head above water.
Paramedics and Trooper Byron Comancho pulled Parshall from the vehicle about 7:15 a.m. The victim was found to have a body temperature of 89 degrees, Slagowski said.
"The paramedics were surprised he was still conscious," Slagowski said. "If he would have lost consciousness, he would have slipped into the water and drowned."
