Former Salt Lake City Auditor Lawrence Ahaz Jones, 88, died Dec. 22, 1988, in Salt Lake City.
Jones served three terms as city auditor, winning office in 1965, 1969 and 1973. He was deputy city auditor before being appointed to fill out the term of his predecessor, Louis E. Holley, when Holley was appointed to the City Commission. Jones easily won re-election, the last two terms without opposition.In 1973 Jones spent only $25 on his re-election bid.
In 1950, Jones ran as a Democrat and was elected to the two-year seat on the Salt Lake County Commission. As commissioner he was in charge of the county's health and charity.
Before going to work for the city, Jones was business manager and budget officer of the Salt Lake General Hospital.
He was educated at LDS Business College, Palmer Institute and the University of Utah.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Dec. 28, in the Bountiful Tabernacle, 51 South Main. Friends may call Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary Chapel, 294 N. Main, and Wednesday at the church, 11:45-12:45 p.m. Burial is in Bountiful City Cemetery.
