About a year ago the world's fashion designers, with suspicious unanimity, decreed that women were going to wear short skirts or look hopelessly outmoded. It's a pleasure to note that they the designers, not the women are in full retreat.

It's an old trick, of course, for designers to go from long to short or loose-fitting to tight to make women dissatisfied with their existing wardrobes and to sell them new clothes. But this time women balked. A lot of retailers had poor fall and winter seasons, complaints went back to the designers and, voila, longer skirts are due for fall. Women have shown that they can no longer be easily manipulated by designers with designs on their pocketbooks. Good.
