Once believed to be extinct in Idaho, the wolverine is alive, but maybe not well, game officials say.

Craig Groves, a biologist with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, recently completed a survey that revealed that wolverines still may exist in three areas: the Selkirk Mountains near Priest Lake, the Lochsa River and Kelly Creek drainages in north-central Idaho and the Sawtooth-Smoky Mountains in the central part of the state. This winter, the Nongame and Endangered Species Program is conducting a survey to determine the status and distribution of wolverines there.
