David Edwards Jones, 64, a professor of theater arts at the University of Utah, died Dec. 22, 1988, after suffering a heart attack at his home Monday.

Dr. Jones, who earned a doctorate at the University of Minnesota, was born July 18, 1924 in Crosskeys, Gwent, Wales. He began teaching theater and directing theater productions at the U. in Sept. 1965 after receiving his doctorate degree in 1963 at the University of Minnesota where he had also been a teaching assistant and instructor for the English department.Dr. Jones earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from University College in Cardiff, Wales and served in the British Navy during World War II.

During his tenure at the U. he served as director of graduate studies, chairman of the Theatre History Committee and served on the theater department's Academic Advisory and Ph.D. programs committees. He received the distinguished teaching award from the university in 1970.

Dr. Jones also wrote numerous articles and books and directed many Shakespearean productions. He specialized in the history of dramatic theory and modern poetic drama, particularly the works of T.S. Elliott.

A private family gathering will be held in Ogden Tuesday. A memorial service is scheduled Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Babcock Theater on the U. campus where he directed numerous plays.
