Dillard Department Stores Inc., a 223-store chain based in Little Rock, Ark., will open its first store in Utah in the space formerly occupied by Weinstock's in Murray's Fashion Place mall.
A spokesman said the store will open as soon as remodeling is completed.Dillard officials said they have purchased the lease and fixtures from Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc., San Francisco, but no price was disclosed. The deal includes store properties and assumption of Weinstock's lease held by Hahn Property Management Co., San Diego, Calif., manager of Fashion Place and the Ogden City malls.
Dillard officials also are negotiating for space in the Ogden City Mall, according to mall manager Kevin Ireland. It will take extensive remodeling before the Fashion Place store is ready, but Dillard officials hope to open before Thanksgiving.
Give the size of the store, a Dillard spokeswoman estimated it will employ about 293 people.
The former Weinstock's space in the Crossroads Plaza is being remodeled by Mervyn's Department Stores, which will give that chain stores in Ogden, Layton, Valley Fair, Brickyard, the Family Center and Orem. Mervyns is scheduled to open a new 83,000 square-foot store in 1994 in the South Towne Mall in Sandy.
