Assistant coaches Dennis Green of the San Francisco 49ers and Paul Hackett of the Dallas Cowboys head a list of tentative finalists for the vacant football head coaching job at Stanford, according to reports published Friday.

The 14-member selection committee has eliminated three other candidates - Stanford defensive coordinator Dick Mannini, Pitt offensive line coach Bill Meyers and Penn State secondary coach Ron Dickerson, said the reports in the Times Tribune of Palo Alto and the San Jose Mercury News.A new coach is now not expected to be named until the first week of January.

"The sooner we do it the better, but not at the expense of making certain we select the right coach," said the athletic director, who chairs the committee.

Coach Bill Walsh of the 49ers indicated he will recommend both Green and defensive coordinator George Seifert for the newly vacated San Diego Chargers coaching job.
