Wyoming football Coach Paul Roach, who transformed the Cowboys from a doormat to Top 20 power in two seasons, Friday was rewarded with a contract extension that runs through 1997.

Roach, who also serves as Wyoming's athletic director, declined comment on the extension, which also calls for him to receive a $10,000 raise. The university's Board of Trustees agreed on the extension via a series of telephone calls and must formally approve it at one of its monthly business meetings. The extension came two days before Christmas and a week before 15th-ranked Wyoming meets 12th-ranked Oklahoma State in the Sea World Holiday Bowl. It allows the 61-year-old Roach to serve either as athletic director, as football coach, or as both during the nine years.
