The Utah Safety Council estimates as many as five people could be killed in traffic accidents in the state during the Christmas and New Year holiday season.

Motorists are urged by the council to use extra caution when on the streets and highways during the holidays. Drivers should exercise patience and courtesy with fellow travelers and drive at reduced speeds in poor road and weather conditions, said spokesman Robert Parenti.The Christmas Holiday period began at 6 p.m. Friday and extends until midnight Monday, Dec. 26. The New Year period lasts from 6 p.m. Dec. 30 to midnight Jan. 2.
