Kennedy Junior High School students who enjoyed an impromptu vacation when a furnace malfunctioned will have to pay the piper.

The students must make up two of the four days they missed, through extra long days during January. The students missed Dec. 5-8 because a ruptured main waterline flooded the school's boiler room, causing damage to electrical equipment.

The State Board of Education Tuesday authorized a waiver of two of the days but required that the additional two days be made up.

Granite District officials suggested that school days be extended by 35 minutes - five minutes per period - for 21 days beginning in January.

Parents will be notified of the altered school schedule.
