A Jan. 17 hearing has been scheduled by the Idaho Public Utilities Commission to consider a Union Pacific Railroad proposal to abandon 30 miles of a branch line from Ashton to Tetonia in Fremont and Teton counties in eastern Idaho.

The hearing will begin at 10 a.m. at the Madison County Library, 73 N. Center, Rexburg.Union Pacific says the line is under embargo, allowing no traffic because of winter washout damage. Major shippers on the line include Farmers Grain Coop, General Mills and Reinke Grain located in Tetonia.

The hearing is to determine whether the abandonment would be adverse to the public interest. If such a finding is made, the commission would be required to represent the people of Idaho before the federal Interstate Commerce Commission, which has final say on the abandonment.

Persons wishing to speak at the hearing should sign in as they enter. Those wishing to cross examine witnesses must petition the commission for permission prior to the hearing.
