More than 624 million books of scripture were distributed in 1987 by the world's Bible societies, 4 percent more than in the previous year.

It was the largest annual distribution by the United Bible Societies global partnership since its founding in 1946, according to the American Bible Society.ABS, through its work at home and financial support of the work abroad, itself accounted for 46.5 percent of the world distribution, a total of 290 million scriptures also making it the biggest year in its own 172-year history an increase of close to one million copies over 1986.
