A rescue boat carrying divers left the shore of Broad Bay early Wednesday in a risky attempt to capture a stranded bottlenose dolphin and fly it to warmer waters.

The effort, which included about 30 people, was coordinated by a dolphin expert from New Jersey. The mission was authorized Monday by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The male dolphin, nicknamed Rascal, failed to migrate south for the winter. Rescuers hoped to capture the mammal in nets and fly it to North Carolina's Outer Banks.
