West Germany captured its first Davis Cup title with a bang, but the event ended with a whimper Sunday as Stefan Edberg won a lackluster singles match and Mats Wilander and Boris Becker declined to play.

Edberg saved Sweden from the humiliation of a whitewash with a 6-4, 8-6 victory over Carl-Uwe Steeb that left Sweden a 4-1 loser.
