The world's largest man-made hole - the Bingham Canyon open-pit mine will open to visitors for the 1988 season on April 1.

The mine, which is a half-mile deep and 21/2 miles wide, may be viewed from an observation area on the north side seven days a week from 8 a.m. until dusk. Admission is free.Visitors can view the mine's daily operations, which may include blasting, loading ore by giant electric power shovels and transporting the ore to a new crusher. The center also includes memorabilia such as a giant tire from one of the 170-ton diesel trucks.

Visitors can reach the mine by taking the 72nd South exit of I-15 to 78th South, then driving west through Copperton.
