State police investigating the deaths of six women found along highways in the New Bedford area arrested a 35-year-old man Tuesday on charges of kidnapping a woman and raping and assaulting her with a dangerous weapon.

A state police spokesman refused to link the suspect, Neil F. Anderson of New Bedford, to the six murders, but news reports said he was considered a prime suspect in the possible serial killings.Anderson, who is unemployed, surrendered without incident at his home 10 blocks from the Weld Square area, where at least some of the victims were believed to have worked as prostitutes, the spokesman said.
