Gunmen shot and killed a Belgian national Monday as he walked along a Moslem west Beirut street near a Syrian army checkpoint, police said.

The victim, identified as George Arthur Jan Van Newwerborg, 65, was walking in the city's Manara neighborhood when he was attacked by three assailants and shot with a gun equipped with a silencer, a police spokesman said."The man was killed at 11 a.m., but still we have no details on his murderers or his status," the spokesman said. Neighbors said Van, a teacher at the Moslem-run Ras Beirut cultural center, was divorced and lived with his son in the area.
