A 6-year-old girl playing with a handgun accidentally shot her mother in the head Saturday morning, police said. The 25-year-old woman was in critical condition Saturday night at LDS Hospital.
No foul play is suspected in the 10:57 a.m. shooting of Lori Lucero, 3067 Baty Dr., said Salt Lake police Lt. Steve Diamond. "It was nothing more than an accident."Diamond said Lucero was visiting her sister at 1378 S. Robert St. (240 East), Apt. 8 when the child found a .22-caliber handgun. The child picked up the weapon, and thinking it was a toy, accidently fired it.
Even though police are certain the child discharged the gun, Diamond said, "The owner of the gun apparently panicked, took the gun and left."
Police Saturday were looking for a man, who is a friend of the family.
