A tentative contract agreement was reached Saturday night between Utah Transit Authority officials and union negotiators hours before the current contract expired.

Dan Butterfield, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 382, and Jerry Benson, manager of labor relations for UTA, reached the agreement. The agreement, which covers 740 of 950 employees, includes increases in benefits, wages and improvements in "operational efficiencies," said UTA spokesman Craig Rasmussen.

Specifics of the agreement won't be released until it is ratified by union members and UTA's board of directors.

The current contract has been extended about one week to ensure uninterrupted service, Rasmussen said.
