U.S. Navy mine sweepers on Friday detonated three mines found earlier in the week near an offshore Iranian oil platform destroyed by American warships, shipping executives reported. The mines were spotted last Tuesday by a French warship near the Sassan platform, about 80 miles west of the Qatar peninsula in the Persian Gulf. The area was declared a navigational hazard and commercial vessels warned to stay away. The French warship reported sighting two submerged mines and a floating one, said the shipping executives, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Sassan is one of the two Iranian platforms that U.S. Navy destroyed Monday in retaliation for a mine blast that holed the American frigate Samuel B. Roberts. ~
