An Oregon man who was shot in the face at a Salt Lake County motel was in critical but stable condition Friday in Cottonwood Hospital.

Randy Clark Mooney, 32, Redmond, Ore., was shot in the face with a .22-caliber handgun, said police Capt. Dan Pearson.Officers were called to the motel, on 72nd South near I-15, shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday and found Mooney in a motel room with a gunshot wound to the face. The bullet apparently penetrated the forehead and caused considerable physical damage.

Mooney's wife, Laura K. Mooney, 26, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted criminal homicide, Pearson said.

Pearson said the Mooneys apparently have been on the road for some time and may have spent time in Colorado before coming to Utah.

The woman called police and met officers in the motel lobby, Pearson said.
