The Utah Wildlife Resources Division is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of a hunter who poached a young bull moose near Snowbasin Ski Resort.

"We believe the moose was shot with a .44-caliber handgun right near the Snowbasin Road," division law enforcement spokesman Craig Miya said Thursday. The moose was found alive Tuesday in the Wheeler Creek area, near the northern Utah ski resort. It had been shot in the back, Miya said, and had to be killed by division officers to end its suffering.

"We don't have a suspect yet," he said, "but we're running down several leads."
