Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah, asked the Bureau of Reclamation on Tuesday for a speedy analysis of the Central Utah Project's design and anticipated water deliveries compared to the state's water needs.

In a letter to Commissioner C. Dale Duvall, Owens refers to the drought that has lingered in Utah during the past two summer seasons and made reference to a "crisis" on the Provo River that has "made obvious the need to focus greater attention to the correlation between the state's water needs and the Central Utah Project's anticipated deliveries."Environmental issues involving the Provo River have consumed a fair amount of Owens' time recently as he mediated a negotiation between water users and environmental and sportsmen's organizations that led to a compromise flow on the Provo River.
